Grant Park Skate Park, Chicago, IL

This was my project for the 2004 spring semester at UIC.  We had an option to design a skate park, a velodrome or a building that included both.  We studied motion, materials and we also had to consider the structural possibilities of developing our project.  At UIC, we had integrated studios where we would had building science and design studios combined in one studio.  The whole class had the same site.  The site chosen for the project was a large, underused block in Grant Park in downtown Chicago.  I designed the site to create an additional outdoor room in the overall layout for Grant Park.  The large pill shaped space in the center of the site was a competitive bike racing track that connects to the bike paths on the bordering blocks and to bike storage in the Grant Park Skate Park.

The first floor of the skate park, toward the top of the site, is where the indoor skate park, lockers, a pro shop and restrooms all were located. This was intentional to make the give the building to the skaters. This way, the vibe of the building is created by the people, music and skating.
